Steps to take in the Classroom

Strategies to implement in the classroom:

1. Give frequent feedback on academic, social, and behavioral performance. Providing an open positive conversation about the student's strengths allows for the instructors to address what the student may not be succeeding in, in a non-threatening way (Parekh, 2017).

2. Assign one individual to serve as a primary contact and coordinate interventions. Having a point person to address specific needs and help one on one with academics and social skills (Crundwel & Killu, 2010).

3. Develop modifications and accommodations to respond to the student's fluctuations in mood, the ability to concentrate, or side effects of medication (Maag, & Reid 2006).  While students do individual work, the classroom teacher could review with the student the assignment and expectations. Coaching in learning and study strategies to increase independence in the classroom, including making outlines, doing conceptual mapping, and using other tools and devices (Hoagwood, Burns, Kiser, Ringeisen, & Schoenwald, 2001).

Jane found it useful while working with her primary contact, to write down positives and negatives from the week or day in a journal as a good way for her to start understanding and adapting to her feelings more.
